About the Authors

Mike Porter worked in the service bureau industry, creating and producing print/mail jobs in a career that spanned the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. During those three decades he experienced significant technical advances that enabled the creation and distribution of complex documents, with the work being done faster and cheaper than ever before.

During his service bureau career Mike managed a variety of related functions including
production control, customer service, sales, mail center, systems, and application programming departments. As a result, he became knowledgeable and comfortable with how the entire process works together, and how to effectively communicate with disparate groups like customers, executives, business line managers, programmers, and machine operators.

In addition to his service bureau career, Mike has put his document processing expertise to use for companies such as Xerox and Bowe Bell + Howell, helping those companies provide services and products to support customer document operations.

He loves working in the dynamic field of documents where there are always new technologies to utilize and challenges to overcome.

Mike currently runs a consulting practice, Print/Mail Consultants, which specializes in helping organizations that produce high volume output to improve workflow and quality, and decrease costs. He is the author of several articles published in print and online magazines, and his new book Take This Job and Stuff It! A Practical Guide for Document Operations Managers is published by Port Mist Publishing.
